Steel is formed out of iron and carbon. They are divided into different categories depending upon their chemical content or metal alloy contents. Steels grading relies on the number of impurities and elements such as Magnesium, silicon, copper, vanadium, and nickel.

Here are the different type of steels and their uses:

  • Carbon Steels

Carbon steels products are rigid because carbon is an unbreakable element. One of the main alloying constituents of carbon steels is carbon. It accounts for almost 90% of all steels productions. Carbon steels are classified depending upon the carbon content.

  • Mild or low carbon steels: contains up to 0.32% C
  • Medium carbon steels: contains upto 0.30-0.59% C
  • Ultra-high carbon steels that contains about 1.0-2.0%C
  • Low carbon steel is also known as wrought iron; it is the most common and time-saving steel. Decorative products like lamp posts and fencing are great examples of applications of low carbon steel.

Ultra carbon steel is a compact form of steels. Here are the applications: Knives, punches, and axles. Structural applications and automotive systems are medium carbon steel. High carbon steel is for strength wires and springs.

  • Alloy Steels

Alloy steels has properties suitable for a broad range of applications like pipelines, transformers, electric motors, and power generators. Alloy steels have massive properties like superior strength, ductility, ability to resist corrosion. When manganese is put together with alloy steel, it makes the steel strong and sturdy.

  • Tool Steels

Tool steels contain hard metals like tungsten, molybdenum, and vanadium. They are durable; often used for drilling equipment and cutting. Tool steels are of different types, each having different quantities of contrasting alloy metals. When tool steels vary, they offer a distinct level of resistance and durability.

  •    Stainless Steels

Stainless steels contain 10-20% chromium and also hold different types of metal alloys. Compared to other forms of steels, stainless steels is more resistant to rusting. Thus, stainless steel is more appreciated because of its ability to resist corrosion. The durability of stainless steel is high because it can combat wear and tear caused by everyday use.

Steels is the most environmentally friendly and widely used material: in ships, trains, machines, and electrical appliances, because of its superior tensile strength. When it comes to constructing lightweight steel elements, steel requires a low amount of energy. It gives a better formation and advantage than iron used for arms, ammunition, and weapons.
